About Ugadi

UGADI (VEDIC NEW YEAR)

UGADI (yuga-adi, yuga - era, adi - beginning; the start of an era) is the Vedic New Year. In Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka this day is celebrated as Ugadi, the people of Maharashtra observe on the same day as Gudi Padwa. Sindhis celebrate the same day as their New Year day called Cheti Chand.

Ugadi marks the beginning of a new Hindu lunar calendar with a change in the moon's orbit. It is celebrated on the bright fortnight ('Shukla Paksha') of the first month ('Chaitra Masa') in the first season of the year i.e. Spring ('Vasanta-Ritu').

It is believed that the creator of the Hindu pantheon Lord Brahma started creation on this day - "Chaitra Suddha Padhyami" or the Ugadi day. Also the calculations of the great Indian Mathematician Bhaskaracharya proclaim the Ugadi day as the beginning of the New Year, New month and New day. It is also the day on which Krishna gave up his mortal body in a sacred place of pilgrimage called Prabahatsa, near Dvaraka.

It is a day when predictions are made for the New Year. In our temple, Sri Janaki Ram Shastry will be doing the Panchangasravanam on Monday, April 7th, 2008 from 8:15 PM - 9:00 PM
